Message The more likely it can withstand high temperatures without coking. The molecular structure of synthetics is generally more thermally stable than oils produced from conventional base stocks. There are also free radical scavengers that can be added (BHT, the same one you find in foods) is one that is commonly used). There are test that measure an oils tendency to form coke, but I don't know if they are routinely applied to motor oils.
